I used to book flights completely backwards.
I’d wait until I was finally ready to book, search one route, see a high price, panic, and convince myself I had to buy immediately before it went even higher.
That’s exactly how people end up overpaying.
After years of travel, I’ve learned that smart travelers don’t just search for flights — they track them.
Here are 4 things I do now:
✈️ Set Google Flights alerts early
One of the biggest mistakes travelers make is waiting too long. I start tracking flights months before I’m ready to book. Google Flights will alert you when prices drop, rise, or are lower than normal for that route.
✈️ Be flexible by a day or two
Sometimes moving your departure by just one day can save hundreds of dollars. Checking nearby airports can make an even bigger difference.
✈️ Don’t lock yourself into one destination
Some of the best trips start with a great airfare, not a specific destination. The Explore feature on Google Flights can uncover amazing deals to places you may not have even considered.
✈️ Let deals find you
I don’t spend hours searching flights anymore. Fare alerts and deal services do the work for me. Some of the best economy and business-class deals I’ve found came from alerts I never would have discovered on my own.
The bottom line: stop chasing airfare and start tracking it.
That’s when the best deals usually show up.
